Witches, however, have bird-shape dæmons that are able to travel long distances from their bodies. The dæmon communicates with the person and must remain in close physical proximity. In this world, every person's inner spirit partially exists outside the body, manifesting itself as an animal companion called a dæmon. In an alternate retrofuturistic Earth, a powerful church called the Magisterium strictly controls the populace's beliefs and teachings. The film won for Best Visual Effects at the 80th Academy Awards and for Best Special Visual Effects at the 61st British Academy Film Awards. The Golden Compass has grossed $372 million worldwide but was a box office disappointment in North America which directly contributed to New Line's 2008 restructuring. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for the casting and visual effects, but criticism for its pacing, characterization, and screenplay, drawing unfavorable comparisons to Pullman's novel. The Golden Compass premiered in London on November 27, 2007, and was theatrically released in the United Kingdom by Entertainment Film on December 5 and in the United States by New Line on December 7. With a production budget of US$180 million, it is one of New Line Cinema's most expensive films, and prior to release, the film faced criticism from secularist and religious organisations due to the source material's anti-religious themes, which caused several changes to the film in post-production. Principal photography began that September and lasted for several months, with filming locations including Shepperton Studios and also on location throughout England, Switzerland, and Norway. Richards was cast as Lyra in June 2006, with Kidman and Craig joining soon thereafter. In the film, Lyra joins a tribe of seafarers on a trip to the far North in search of children kidnapped by the Gobblers, a group supported by the universe's rulers, the Magisterium.ĭevelopment on the film was first announced in February 2002, but difficulties over the screenplay and the selection of a director (including Weitz departing and returning) caused significant delays. It stars Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra Belacqua, Nicole Kidman as Marisa Coulter, and Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel, alongside Sam Elliott, Ian McKellen, and Eva Green. which was probably what got him banned in some places. The Golden Compass is a 2007 fantasy adventure film directed by Chris Weitz, from a screenplay by Weitz, and based on the 1995 novel Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, the first installment in Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. He wrote another entitled, The good man Jesus and the scoundrel Christ. Yea I read the trilogy got them on e book.
GOLDEN COMPASS 2 WATCH ONLINE SERIES
I may still get my chance as apparently BBC1 & HBO are about to present a series on this trilogy, without leaving out the parts to make it easier to digest for church like they did in the movie. Now I'm not really a reader anymore of fiction otherwise I'd get them.

Christian church (reformed) still has a big say in stuff unfortunately, but I doubt it'd be enough to ban books.Īnd pleasantly touched to see Amazon sells the books. I don't think church could pull it off here to get books or movies banned.Ĭertainly not Catholic church, they lost their power ages ago, and quite rightfully so. I couldn't believe it! America truly is a land where everything is possible I suppose, haha. Then I Googled it and learnt that the books got banned, mostly in the US, due to church? WTF? Catholic church mainly feels it promotes atheism (so what?) and anti-church feelings. There won't be any more movies as it didn't get good critics for whatever reason. Based on the trilogy His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman.
